Ice Breaker: 9-Square

Name

9 SQUARE

Upshot

Participants rotate through partners as they respond to multiple light-hearted questions.

Group Size

Any size!

Good For…

  • First Days
  • New Groups
  • Large Groups
  • Flexible timing
  • Fun vibe

Facilitation

  • Prepare a 3×3 grid with 9 questions (pictured and linked below)
  • Have participants stand, circulate, and find a partner. Read the first question out loud. Participants discuss their answers for ~1 minute.
  • When time is up, you’ll need a good nonverbal cue to get the group’s attention (for example, when you raise your hand, they raise their hands and stop talking).
  • Read the next question aloud (it’s important for flow that you read the next question before people rotate).
  • On your cue, participants rotate to their next partner and begin answering the second question.
  • Repeat until all 9 questions are asked OR until your time window is up. Something great about this exercise is that it’s flexible with timing. You can stop after any of the questions and pick up later in the session (as a break) or later in the day, at a future session, etc.
